〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Norman Harold Osborn, more commonly known as Normie Osborn. (He hasn't come up with a name for himself and the symbiote yet. Give him time.)
CHARACTER AGE: 20
SERIES: Spider-Girl
CHRONOLOGY: Spider-Girl 96.
CLASS: Hero
HOUSING: No preference to where, if he could room with May Parker, that'd be great.

BACKGROUND:
Earth 982, the official designation of the world created in the Marvel Comics 2 imprint, is a lot like Marvel’s main Earth: 616. There’s the staples: superheroes, supervillains, magic, mutants, aliens, atlanteans, Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four… in fact, up until a specific point in time, the timelines of Earth 616 and Earth 982 were identical. It was a single person that would be responsible for the divergence of 616 and 982, specifically their birth. In Earth 616, the daughter of Peter and Mary Jane Parker was stillborn (though with One More Day, it’s unknown if she even existed in the first place), but in Earth 982, May “Mayday” Parker was stolen by a woman posing as a nurse and lived.

This is the premise around which Normie’s world was created. The start of Spider-Girl takes place 15 years later, and as such the status quo has changed. Many of “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” have withdrawn from the spotlight, either through death or retirement, and a new generation, including Mayday, find themselves taking their place. The most prominent of the first generation of heroes still at it are Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm, but rather than being members in the Fantastic Four, it's the Fantastic Five. The Avengers consists entirely of second-generation/legacy heroes such as leader American Dream (Shannon Carter, niece of Sharon Carter), J2 (Zane Yama, son of the reformed villain the Juggernaut), and Stinger (Cassie Lang), and newly created heroes such as Bluestreak (Blue Kelso), Freebooter (Brandon Cross), and Warp. It’s never explicitly stated what happened to the original X-Men team (though it’s insinuated that they disbanded), but the now adult Jubilee has created a new team of mutants called the X-People.

All of this was background noise to Normie’s life. What’s more important is what happened after it was discovered that May was, in fact, alive. See, like in the 616 Clone Saga, Norman Osborn had orchestrated the whole shebang, but his plan was foiled when Kaine, the imperfect, angry clone of Peter Parker discovered this deception and returned her to her mother.

This didn’t make Norman Osborn too happy. Or Peter Parker (who had been mourning the loss of his child for months) for that matter. This all came to a head 3 years later in a battle between Norman and Peter, when Norman’s pumpkin bomb accidentally exploded in his hand, killing him instantly and causing Peter to lose a leg. Peter retired that day, locking the costume in an attic and focused on being a husband and father.

But that wasn’t the end of it for Norman’s grandson. Despite the fact that Normie was only 6 at the time, Norman’s death had a profound impact on the child. Norman had already begun grooming him to take up the mantle of Green Goblin, and despite the best efforts of his mother, Liz Allan, and his new stepfather, Franklin “Foggy” Nelson, Normie allowed the thoughts of his grandfather’s (and father’s) death to fester and grow within him as he grew into a young adult.

When his mom fell ill to an unknown illness (which she would later die from), he snapped, becoming the third Osborn to take on the mantle of the Green Goblin. He challenges Peter to a duel at the George Washington Bridge (because Osborn’s just love that damn bridge). Peter tries to talk Normie down, but he won’t hear any of it. Luckily, Mayday arrives, wearing her uncle’s Spider-Man costume, and is able to defeat Normie. Twice more they battle, and which each loss he’s sent to a Sanitarium for treatment. After the first defeat, Normie is out for revenge, but after the second loss, his thoughts turn suicidal. He kidnaps May in an attempt to get her to kill him to end the Spider-Goblin War. May showed him that there was another way: the war would end if they stopped seeing one another as enemies.

That was the start of a new Normie Osborn. He began to take his therapy seriously and started making strides to better mental health. May would stop in from time to time to check on him, and soon would confide in him her problems. They would quickly become quite close. Soon Normie was helping her any way he could, Normie setting her up in one of his grandfather’s old safe houses and building crime fighting weapons for her when she temporarily lost her powers. He also became friends with former (good) Green Goblin Phil Urich when he handed over the name and all of his equipment to Phil, and began helping him in his quest to be a hero. Over time, he also found himself working with a group of young heroes who took up the name the New Warriors, aiding them behind the scenes. It’s never explicitly stated what becomes of their partnership after a while, but it’s reasonable to assume Normie is still helping them from behind the scenes.

In his personal life, Normie became involved with Brenda Drago. Like Normie, Brenda had turned to crime because she felt she had to, and also like Normie, Spider-Girl had convinced her to try a different path. The two met in group therapy and immediately hit it off. He tried to save her from serving jail time, but the DA was persistent and she was sentenced for an unknown amount of time. Shortly after her conviction, she was recruited by Special Agent Arthur Weadon from the FBI to join a top secret government program, a sort of work release for supervillains. On the team was Kaine, and other former Spider-Girl villains Big Man, Tripwire, and Mr. Nobody. Only Mr. Nobody had no intention of being reformed by the government. He quickly went off the reservation and began working for Canis, a New York crime lord looking to become the new Kingpin of Crime. While rogue, he tried to assassinate Normie, shooting him four times in the chest. Normie fought for his life, and ultimately managed to make a full recovery. The accident made Brenda realize she wanted to spend the rest of her life with him...

But Normie wasn't ready. Before the couple could deal with this, a woman named Elan DeJunae appeared, claiming to be Normie's wife. It turned out that during Norman's time in Europe years before, he had formed a cult that called themselves the Order of the Goblin, consisting of fanatics who believed Norman held the key to a new world order, and planned to see it through with Normie as their leader--whether he was willing or not. Elan had been promised to Normie back when the pair were toddlers by their father and grandfather respectively, and Elan took her duties as "the Goblin Queen" very seriously. When charming Normie failed, she kidnapped him and dumped him into the same vat of chemicals that his father and grandfather had been exposed to. Spider-Girl saved the day, and it appears that there was no long lasting effects of the chemical bath.

This was the push Normie needed to say yes to Brenda's proposal. Only Elan wasn't finished. She stole the Venom symbiote from a secure government facility and threw it over Normie, bonding him to it. Venom took over, though Normie began to show signs of control by refusing to allow the symbiote to give out anyone's real names. With May's help, he was able to break free from the symbiote's control... but he refused to help destroy it. While they had been bonded together, he had seen something in it that no one else had seen, and was determined to rehabilitate it the way May had rehabilitated him. She hesitantly allowed him to do it.

By this point, Normie realized the harder he tried to distance himself from the Osborn (or more accurately, the Goblin) legacy, the more other people would be allowed to write that legacy for him. So he decided to nip that in the bud. He became majority shareholder of the Osborn Corporation (taking the title from Foggy, who had inherited it from Liz following her death), and began working to make not only a name for himself, but also that of the Green Goblin by restoring all of his former Goblin powers (Phil, for all of his enthusiasm, wasn't really that great at it). It was also at this point that Normie, now going by Norman, started to experiment with the symbiote's power.

Unfortunately, these things didn't go unnoticed, and soon both the Avengers and FBI Agent Weadon became suspicious of him. They all soon discovered Normie was in possession of the symbiote, and just as quickly learned he was on their side when he helped take down/save the rogue, cybernetic Jim Rhodes (comics!). He turned himself into Brenda's custody, and he became the first (and only!) non-criminal member of the Agent Weadon's team.

PERSONALITY:
Despite sharing the name of his (in)famous grandfather, Normie is very much his own person, but this wasn't always the case. He was young when both his father and grandfather died (in Norman's case, the second time he died), and he took both of those deaths hard. He grew up internalizing their losses, turning them into martyrs in the "Spider-Goblin war." Despite being initially fond of Peter, he felt as though he had to hate him, in honor to preserve his father and grandfather's legacy. Through it all, he managed to hold it all together with the support of his loving mother, until the day she fell ill.

Normie finally snapped, acting only in ways he thought he should act as an Osborn. And of course, when Osborn's lose it, it involves putting on a goblin mask and hanging around the George Washington Bridge. When he was defeated by Spider-Girl, he fell even further into the black hole that is the Osborn legacy, deeming himself a failure while simultaneously redoubling his efforts to prove himself a worthy heir like his grandfather intended. When his second go around as the Green Goblin ended even more disastrously than his first, he could only see himself as a failure, and gave up. He even tried to goad Spider-Girl into killing him. He knew he needed help and he honestly believed that was the only way he was going to get it. Instead she did everything in her power to help him turn his life around.

Normie has since come into his own, tapping into an inner strength the Normie masquerading as the Green Goblin never would have imagined possible. Thanks initially to the encouragement of May and his therapists, he’s now quite confident in himself and his abilities, successfully running the Osborn Corporation with ease at the young age of 20, while simultaneously assisting Spider-Girl, the Green Goblin, and the New Warriors in their fight on crime.

His confidence manifests itself in the way he withstands and deflects public scrutiny. His grandfather (and to a degree, his father) was a very well known public figure whose descent into madness and supervillainy was also just as public. His brief stint as the Green Goblin was also widely known, and so gave the public a very distinct picture as to who Normie Osborn should be. Through it all, Normie never blinked, never backed down, and never tried to be someone else to avoid the scrutiny, even finding some of the perceptions amusing, such as when a policeman expressed confusion and surprise when he saw Normie and the Green Goblin standing next to one another, as everyone assumed Normie continued to operate as the Green Goblin. When he took over the Osborn Corporation, he started going by Norman, knowing full well it would evoke the memory of his grandfather, but that didn’t matter to him. He was a different Norman Osborn, and he wasn’t going to let anyone insinuate otherwise.

It’s also this confidence that leads him to willingly bond with the symbiote, managing to keep control by sheer force of will. In fact, through love, patience, and willpower, Normie manages to “reset” the symbiote to its natural form, purging the Venom persona entirely, a feat no one else bonded to the symbiote has ever accomplished.

For those willing to see past the inaccurate perception of Normie will find that he’s a pretty outgoing, friendly, average guy. He’s unafraid to reach out to new people, and those that he does become fast friends. Phil Urich went from believing Normie was up to no good to lifelong friend in about an hour (though to be fair, the exchanging of Goblin tech was involved). He quickly becomes a confidant to and coordinator for the New Warriors after their founding. He freely volunteers himself to build tech for May, Phil, and various members of the New Warriors (and further along in his timeline, Peter), even as more and more of his time was taken by running the Osborn Corporation.

He often winds up being the voice of reason to whoever he’s talking to. Though never rude, he’s usually blunt and honest in his assessment of things or people, whether it’s friend trouble May’s having at school, or how likely a certain supervillain is to be redeemed… which is why Phil and May so often turn to him for support, support he’s always happy to give.

That said, every so often his Osbon pokes through. At its tamest, it manifests as an icy coldness aimed at employees talking about him behind his back. Normie, takes running his business very seriously, and doesn’t tolerate this sort of thing (of course, he just scares the crap out of them by joining in the conversation rather than harming them, but still). At its worst it manifests as a crazed glint in his eye and grin on his face as he delivers what sounds like a villainous monologue… but never actually is. In fact, most of the time this does happen, Normie’s about to do something heroic, or at least help someone doing something heroic. He’s pulled this twice on Phil--once when he officially passes on the Green Goblin name (and tech), and the second when he restores Phil’s goblin powers.

It’s unclear whether he’s doing this on purpose to mess with people or its leftover from his Goblin-ness, as its utilized in the story as a misdirect, but personally I’m inclined to think its him screwing with people. Normie is a young adult that’s fully aware of what the public thinks he must be like, given his family’s history and by acting this way, taking pieces of how people expect him to behave and subverting it, he’s not only making a statement about how he’s not his grandfather, or even his father, he’s also subtly changing the legacy of what it means to be an Osborn.

Basically: suck it, grandpa.

POWER:
Normie is currently in possession of the alien symbiote more commonly known as Venom (although it is currently purged its Venom persona). As such, Normie possesses the following abilities through the alien creature:
- Enhanced strength
- Enhanced speed
- Enhanced durability
- Organic webbing
- Wall-Crawling
- Accelerated healing factor - though he can't heal from wounds instantaneously, he can definitely heal from wounds quicker than the average human, even serious ones.
- Shapeshifting - The symbiote can change its (and its hosts) appearance at the host's will. Normie primarily uses this ability to camouflage the symbiote as his clothes. This ability also allows him to hide objects inside the symbiote without it being seen, and allows him to completely blend into his surroundings, rendering him effectively invisible (though it’s more like camouflage than true invisibility).

It's weak to sonics and fire.
